Mission Accomplished!!

Now that I am back and can reflect on our mission trip to Oaxaca, Mexico….faces appear in my mind. The appreciative and loving people of the villages we travelled to, and the generous and talented affections of a melded American team of 14.

(A BIG special thank you to Amanda Gardner for going above and beyond with her incredible photography, and for providing us with all of the photos of our Mission Trip!)

Here is a group shot of us all together after dinner with Pastor Felix and his wife Mabel with the wonderful people of San Baltazar…now we were off to meet our host families and our clinic adventure was about to begin!

Heart wrenching moments included people in desperate need, children sick and wanting, and often trying living conditions. With all of this came a humbling and gratifying experience, as I saw those that have so little share their beds while they slept on floors and cook us meals they only ate after we were finished.

As these proud and traditional people received care, they also celebrated with us by shaking hands, warm embraces, and eyes full of pure gratitude. Even though I did not speak their language, I felt a bond and a oneness with everyone we interacted with.

And although our travel and day to day living had it’s challenges, it created a bonding of a team and a love for these beautiful brown eyed Mayan people, as well as appreciation for all I have been blessed with.

Although the days were often long, there were always small joys as well…like making homemade, hand-frothed hot chocolate with our host Mabel who offered us her home and also cooked for us for 3 days!

Jolene, our head of medical helped us to see over 250 patients, while we probably interacted with and assisted over 300. All of this combined with a richness that I have gained from this adventure will keep me focused on how much more there is to accomplish and all of the other trips we need to plan.
