Safe and Spooky, Funky and Neat: Trunk or Treat + Repurposing Sweets!

Posted on Oct 30 2014 - 7:35pm by Jessi Meehan

Treats and trails, snacks and treasure maps, vehicles disguised as Halloween vignette’s…yes, it truly is Trunk or Treat time again! This is our favorite haunt where we support the crazy fall festival at our church! Little ghosts and goblins appear at dusk and wander from each decorated depot, featuring sponsored vehicles all decked out for the season.

This year, having just celebrated our Operation Christmas Child Kickoff event (and getting revved up for the packing party)…we’ve decked out the Escalade to look just like an OCC Shoe-Box! We wrapped up the outside, and filled up the inside with everything needed to give a child the greatest gift…even larger than life. We had a sensational time serving candy for a cause!

This year’s OCC Kickoff Event brought together a BIG group with BIG hearts to hear the Full Circle story of Nanor, and how she received her shoebox in Lebanon at 5 years old.  (Learn more about other’s “Full Circle” stories HERE.) Speaking with the community, sharing stories, and giving out Go-Boxes get us ahead of the game for National Collection Week 11/17 – 11/24. Last year, over 16,400 gift filled shoeboxes were packed locally, and we’re psyched to surpass last year’s success! One Box = One Child! Hearing such an incredible story from Nanor and seeing the box she received so many years later, measurably motivated us to pack extra boxes and really go the distance. Such a distance….that we packed an EXTRA LARGE box for the kids to “trunk or treat” from! LOL  Take a look at this how-to video to pack a shoebox HERE!!

If you’re interested in getting involved locally in Las Vegas, we’re always on the look out for awesome additions to our city-wide team! With our packing party coming up quick, we’re still in serious need of stuffed animals, socks and more. Inquire about getting involved via email at: brenda@practicallyperfectplanner.com or call the local OCC HotLine at: 702.451.0344!

Trunk or treat is a great and ghostly way to take the kids trick or treating safely and sanely….while participating in the seasonal spirit! There are concession stands, games, entertainment on stage and some of them even featured a scavenger hunt! Each child will receive a hand stamp and a scavenger hunt treasure map before they head out to collect all those goodies.

Speaking of goodies, wrapping, and boxes…be sure to save any extra or un-eaten HARD CANDY the kids gather on their haunted hunts! Repurpose your candy for a purpose! These treats can be repurposed into shoe box gifts for children in need around the world through OCC. Creating goodie bags for needy kids whether globally or locally, from your excess findings will make everybody smile. We also like to save our uneaten candy into baggies to be stored in the freezer for safe keeping until the holidays! These can be re-purposed, set out for treats for company, or even used to decorate candy houses.

Have a safe and happy candy hunt, and we hope to see you out at Trunk or Treat next year!
